Transnatural (2016)

“Transnatural” é uma série fotográfica especialmente criada para o livro “Onde o Rio encontra o Mar. City and Sea.” (Ed. Língua Geral, 2016), proposta da designer carioca baseada en Nova York, Maria Lago.  A ideia desse trabalho editorial é refletir sobre os conceitos de praia e cidade, tendo como cenário o Rio de Janeiro, palco do encontro mais famoso entre esses dois universos, que convivem e se complementam no cotidiano da cidade.

As imagens refletem uma aproximação aos elementos não naturais da praia do carioca, que transcendem a natureza apesar de já estarem naturalmente inseridos na rotina do Rio. Encontrei muitos chuveiros, bombas de água e o colorido lindo e primário das muitas cadeiras pelo meu caminho, sempre com o mar ao fundo. Coisas que o nativo do Rio já percebe como parte do cenário, como elementos tão naturais quanto a areia, a água e o céu. A série é um passeio por essa estética artificial, uma narrativa visual desses sinais do homem já fazem parte da natureza, é o Transnatural da orla da cidade.

O trabalho foi feito em mídia analógica (filme 35mm) e as imagens foram tratadas digitalmente pela Joanna Americano Castilho, responsável também pelo tratamento para livros como “Rio” de Marc Ferrez (edição do Instituto Moreira Salles impresso pelo lendário Steidl Publishers, na Alemanha) e “A Cor Americana”, de William Eggleston (Instituto Moreira Salles, 2015). A impressão ficou a cargo da Ipsis Gráfica e Editora.

O texto de apresentação do livro é de Isabel De Luca e a edição também conta com imagens de Luiza Baldan, Lucas Bori, Marcos Chaves, Pedro Garcia (Cartiê Bressão), Demian Jacob, Vicente de Paulo e Tiago Petrik. E também algumas da própria Maria.

Transnatural is a photographic series specially created for the book “Onde o Rio encontra o Mar. City and Sea.” (Ed. Língua Geral, 2016), a project developed by the Rio native designer, Maria Lago, currently based in New York City. The idea of ​​this editorial work is to think about the concepts of city and sea, taking as scenery the city of Rio de Janeiro,  stage for the most famous encounter between these two universes, which coexist and complement each other in the daily life of the city.

The photos reflect an approach to the unnatural elements of the beach in Rio, which transcend nature, although they are naturally included in the natives’ routine. Along the way, I came across showers, water pumps and beautiful primary colors of the beach chairs, always having the sea as a background. Elements like the sand, the ocean and the sky are naturally perceived as part of the scenario for “cariocas”, Rio de Janeiro natives. This photographic series is a walk through this artificial aesthetic, and is meant to be a visual tour through these signs of men which are already a part of nature, the Transnatural of the seashore in this city.

The work was completely done in analog media (35mm film) and the images were digitally processed by Joanna Americano Castilho, also responsible for the digital treatment of books such as “Rio” by Marc Ferrez (an Instituto Moreira Salles edition printed by the legendary Steidl Publishers in Germany) And “The American Color” by William Eggleston (Instituto Moreira Salles, 2015). The printing was in charge of Ipsis Gráfica e Editora.

The book’s introduction was written by Isabel De Luca and the edition also features images by Luiza Baldan, Lucas Bori, Marcos Chaves, Pedro Garcia (Cartiê Bressão), Demian Jacob, Vicente de Paulo and Tiago Petrik. Some pictures were also taken by Maria Lago herself.
